BRONCOS QB PEYTON MANNING NAMED AFC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week for an NFL-record 24th time, the NFL informed the Broncos on Wednesday.

Manning completed 27-of-42 passes (64.3%) for 462 yards with seven touchdowns (141.1 rtg.) in Denver’s 49-27 season-opening win against the defending Super Bowl-champion Baltimore Ravens. His seven touchdowns matched the NFL record (last accomplished by Minnesota’s Joe Knapp in 1969) and his 462 yards tied for the third-highest single-game total in Broncos history.

He became the first player to connect for multiple touchdowns with three different targets, tossing two scoring passes apiece to tight end Julius Thomas as well as wide receivers Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker.

Denver’s 49-point output against the Ravens tied for the second-highest scoring total in team history, as Manning’s five second-half touchdowns helped turn a 17-14 halftime deficit into a 22-point win.

His accomplishment marks the 24th such award of his career, passing Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for the most all-time. It’s the third time he has earned the honor with Denver (Weeks 6, 17 in 2012) and the 49th time a Broncos player has taken home the award.
